Event Planner’s Guide to Travel Security By Paul Viollis

paul viollisThis article was contributed by Paul Viollis.

Balancing event productivity/profitability with ongoing criminal intelligence and venue-related risk is perhaps more challenging than ever before for the event planner. Given the increased risk of terrorism both on American soil and abroad amidst a plethora of other domestic and foreign concerns, this cadre of professionals is clearly in a precarious position as they attempt to solidify the 2016 calendar.

Given the apparent risks and the need for peace of mind, the following illustrates current “Best Practices” for enhancing personal safety during travel.

Pre-Travel Planning

  • Limit travel itinerary to a “need to know” basis and delegate someone as a 24/7 contact and arrange daily communication protocol.
  • Every traveler should have a system of accountability for tracking family members while traveling. This information must be limited to involved parties only and never discussed outside that inner circle.
  • Provide prearranged car service submitting segments of travel only.
  • Ensure no signs are presented to identify the individual traveling by name at the airport.

Travel Precautions

  •  Always maintain a low profile.
  • Avoid routine patterns and vary travel routes.
  • Be conscious of being followed.
  • Never leave a laptop or any type of mobile electronic device unattended and only travel with needed data by utilizing removable media/data storage.
  • Affix an identification label to the outside of laptop to avoid confusion of ownership while processing through secure checkpoints.
  • Morning arrivals and departures are recommended.
  • Take caution when conversing with strangers despite their personal appearance.
  • Avoid traveling with items that are not absolutely necessary.
  • Limit items to be carried.
  • Dine in recognized eateries not off the beaten path.
  • Avoid street vendor food.

Paul Viollis CBS News Law Enforcement Analyst Hired by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos

CBS News has learned investigators hired by Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos have now turned over their findings to law enforcement. They are trying to find out how the National Enquirer obtained private photos and messages from Bezos, who claimed the tabloid was trying to blackmail him.

Paul Viollis CBS News law enforcement analyst thinks someone Lauren Sanchez confided in was the likely leaker. “If I was conducting the investigation, I would be starting it with Miss Sanchez,” Paul Viollis said. “The highest probability of risk here, where this leak came from, would be Sanchez – whether it was her brother, whether it was a friend, whether it was anybody.”

In emails released by Bezos last week, Enquirer officials purportedly claim to have “a naked selfie” and other lewd images of Bezos. They offered not to publish the pictures if the Amazon CEO dropped his investigation.  “I hope common sense can prevail – and quickly,” one email said.

Paul Viollis discusses personal security new status symbol

"When Upper East Side dad Paul Viollis planned a French getaway for his family this summer, his first move wasn’t to book a hotel. Instead, he contacted armed guards."

paul viollisEach Morning in Paris, Paul Viollis (who requested a pseudonym because of privacy concerns), his wife and their 10-year-old son would stroll out of the Hotel George V, where suites can go for $5,000 a night, to meet their personal security detail: two strapping ex-military men who cost $2,000 a day.
“I’m not a worrywart,” said the 38-year-old, who runs a lending fund. “But once you start having kids, [you want] peace of mind against terrorism.”

Wealthy New Yorkers are increasingly turning to hard bodies to protect them during European vacations, particularly in cities such as London, Paris and Berlin that have been hit with high-profile terrorism, say security experts.

“I can’t fill them fast enough,” said CASS Global Security founder Shawn Engbrecht of requests for vacation bodyguards.

Rich people are hiring bodyguards to go to Disney World.

“Our summer was huge . . . on the heels of what happened in Paris and London,” said Paul Viollis, CEO of Viollis Group International, a global security firm. “We’ve gotten maybe 20 new clients.” His firm offers multiple layers of protection — from security drivers and armored vehicles with bulletproof glass to vacation bodyguards. But in the case of a suicide bomber or a truck plowing into a crowd, what can a bodyguard even do?

Paul Viollis College Housing and Safety

paul viollisPaul Viollis Podcast : Assignment #8 should be another of the more enjoyable and less academic assignments. Its premise is that, if a student is not living at home during college, then the kinds of residence halls or other campus housing available at a college makes a difference in the life of that student–at least for the freshman year and often for much longer.
